Appendix A - Climatic Data

No climatic data is available for the immediate area of Towford itself but close parallels may be drawn with the data from Sourhope Farm (845203), which lies 11 kilometres to the north-east in the Bowmont Valley, and at about the same elevation, 230 metres O.D.

The following information, relative to Sourhope Farm, was kindly provided by the Hill Farming Research Organisation. It covers the ten year period from 1962 - 1972 only and it should be borne in mind that this is a very short period from which to generalise, e.g. the November rainfall does not conform to the general pattern experienced elsewhere in the Borders. Comparative data for other parts of Southern Scotland may be found in the various volumes of “Memoirs of the Soil Survey of Great Britain” published by H.M. Stationery Office.

The extracts from the Towford School log-book, given in Chapter 6, give a realistic impression of weather conditions, the most noticeable feature being the late-Spring snowstorms. Severe ground frost may occur as late as June if the night sky if clear, sufficient to kill back the young bracken in some parts of the valley. The prevailing wind direction is from the south-west. The average annual rainfall is probably about 1000mm. June has the lowest rainfall and the greatest amount of sunshine though mean temperatures are marginally lower than in July and August. June is undoubtedly the best month to visit the Towford Outdoor Centre in terms of weather conditions.
